Treatment

Patients with acute, subacute or chronic tinnitus can take part of 9-day outpatient short-term therapy, which is based on scientific results of research. The „Krefelder Modell“ according to Dr. rer. medic. Martin Kusatz contains strategies from the psychological and psychoacoustical sector, which leads the patients to a habituation to the tinnitus and a reduction of the disturbances caused by the tinnitus.

1. Medical Consultation

In the framework of our medical consultation attending doctors are available to answer your questions and if necessary make therapy recommendations. It has been shown that patients are often confused in relation to the possible causes of their tinnitus, which leads to a further intensification of the symptoms.

Medical consultation makes a significant contribution to the success of the treatment by counteracting this confusion.

2. Psychological Immunisation Training (PIT®)

Based on the therapy approach of the research group centred on Prof. Kröner-Herwig, we have developed an immunisation training that takes effect as rapidly as possible and leads to a new independence from tinnitus. Our psychologists practise with patients methods of relaxation (progressive muscle relaxation according to Jacobson), methods of cognitive restructuring as well as techniques of attention focusing. The patients are put in the position to manage the unpleasantness of tinnitus through active self-control. Furthermore, a defocusing of attention away from tinnitus is furthered, so raising the tolerance towards it.

3. Auditive Stimmulation Therapie – Psychoacoustic Awareness Training (PWT®)

Our therapists work with tinnitus training programmes especially developed in our centre. In the institute's own recording studio these programmes are being constantly updated and matched to the needs of the patients. Each patient receives a recording of these training programmes, so that even after ending the therapy he can work with them independently.

Furthermore, special exercises are learnt and carried out, on the one hand to increase self-control over the tinnitus and on the other hand to bring about a change in therapeutically unfavourable behaviour patterns.

The effects of the psychoacoustic perception training have been scientifically proven in university studies by Dr. M. Kusatz.
